How it works
Understanding Tax Deadlines and Their Effect
You might be feeling the temptation, once a filing deadline is missed, to delay taking action. It can feel like an escape to mimic an ostrich and stick your head in the sand. Unfortunately, this just compounds the mistake of not filing the return to begin with.
How the IRS takes action
If you wait long enough the IRS will use the documents received under your identification number and file your tax return for you. This is called a Substitute for Return (SFR). When the IRS files this SFR they file it with little or none of the deductions you are entitled to when you file your return yourself. Also, keep in mind that making any sort of deal with the IRS will require compliance — which includes having all tax returns filed.
